2025

Reflecting on my journey as a JICA scholar at Niigata University, I realize that the greatest gift was the chance to learn not only advanced science but also the importance of collaborative and cultural understanding from the multicultural group of people from different regions of Africa and beyond. I remember during my time as a JICA scholar, I always felt at home because of the kind of group we had, from the students to the staff to the support desk. I only have fond memories of that. I had the chance of participating in multiple JICA activities, from school visits to tours to international exchange programs and several networking activities with Japanese companies; it was memorable.
In October 2022, I arrived in Japan as a research student at the Faculty of Science, Niigata University. The research theme of my master’s degree was on “Gold mineralization within basement rocks of Nigeria.” When I arrived, I was welcomed by my supervisor, who was kind enough to treat me to my first taste of sushi. I was then paired with a Japanese tutor who helped me with the procedures at the bank, ward office, etc., and showed me around Niigata. This allowed me to settle quickly and acclimate easily to my new surroundings.
Six months later, I enrolled in the master’s program at the Graduate School of Science and Technology as a full-time student. Thanks to my supervisor’s guidance, I was able to conduct my research smoothly, and I am grateful to him for that. I would like to mention that the Japanese language lessons provided by Niigata University to JICA scholars, specifically through the ALC Japanese language school, are something I will forever be thankful for because they significantly improved my Nihongo skills. This is a rare opportunity that all incoming JICA scholars should take full advantage of.
Summer Internship
As part of the ABE Initiative program, JICA scholars have the opportunity to participate in a summer internship with a Japanese company. My experience at IHI Corporation in Tokyo was truly amazing. Although it lasted only a few weeks, I still cherish it. I learned the importance of discipline and time management and observed how even small tasks are completed with precision. The attention to detail is exceptional and essential for achieving excellent results.
Overall, my time as a JICA scholar at Niigata University has been more than just an academic pursuit—it has been a life-changing experience. I gained knowledge about life principles such as Ikigai (生き甲斐) and the 5S methodology, which emphasizes discipline, mindfulness, respect, and balance—key values in Japanese culture. Japan has taught me values that extend beyond the laboratory. I carry with me not only research knowledge, but also friendships, cultural experiences, and a renewed sense of purpose. I am committed to applying these skills and knowledge to address challenges at home while strengthening ties between Japan and my country. I hope to serve as a bridge between Japan and my country, fostering knowledge exchange and promoting sustainable development. The experiences I have gained will remain a cornerstone of my academic and professional life.

Life has taught me a lot, financial resources are a limitation, health is a gift from God, and the challenges are enormous, I traveled miles and miles in search of one of my dreams and through curiosity, surrender and accepting the challenges I ended up arriving, yes with long hours of flight, I arrived in Japan especially at Niigata University, where I realized that, despite the low temperatures that plague that region, the wonderful Japanese culture, the daily routine of research, the language itself, were not easy to overcome, but in the end I won and left with my head held high, Dear brothers it has been a unique opportunity, I encourage you to overcome the challenges and visit Niigata University, tomorrow you can make your dreams come true and you will leave very happy.

Homesickness and culture shock are the first enemies you will encounter, be who you are and approach them with patience. You are in the ocean of knowledge, exploring new horizons, striving, and being proactive and committed to your dream. You have all the tools, grab the opportunity, and make yourself a reality. Others made it, I did mine, and now!! why not you? The sky is the limit.

At Niigata University, you will join a community that values both tradition and innovation, with a strong outlook towards the wider world. Located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan’s leading rice-producing region and a place with a deep agricultural culture.
For those already here, the Muramatsu and Shindori experimental stations are invaluable. They bring classroom learning into real practice, whether in farming, livestock management, or sustainable forestry. These experiences show how ideas take shape once they are tested on the ground.
For those just beginning, it is worth remembering that agriculture today goes beyond producing food. Niigata University is advancing digital agriculture (DX), combining robotics, drones, and soil analysis with established methods. The future of farming depends on connecting biology, technology, and care for the environment. Developing these skills together will prepare you for the challenges ahead.
You will also find a wide range of research opportunities here. From genetics and plant breeding to hydrology, food science, and animal genome studies, the University supports work that reaches across disciplines and borders. Many projects are international in scope, reminding us that challenges such as food security and climate change cannot be solved in isolation.
Alongside study and research, life here should be balanced. Join student societies, explore Niigata’s culture, and enjoy its natural beauty. These experiences will enrich your time as much as your academic work.
Welcome to Niigata University, the place that shaped my life.
